The Fort Pitt Block House (two words) was constructed in 1764 and is the oldest building in Pittsburgh and the oldest structure west of the Allegheny Mountains associated with colonial expansion. The Block House served Fort Pitt as a defensive redoubt for less than 10 years. In 1772 it was being used by Alexander McKee as a Trading Post. From 1785 until 1894 it was a multi-family residence having been split into apartments. Since 1894, the Fort Pitt Society, Pittsburgh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution have owned and administered the building as a historic landmark and museum. Admission is free Wednesday through Sunday 10 AM-5 PM.
  • Allegheny West Neighborhood, Jack (guest) wrote 18 years ago:
This quaint and ever gentrifying neighborhood on Pittsburgh's North Shore is renowned locally for it's architecture. Once home to steel barons and the upper echelons of society, these tree-lined avenues now host an eclectic mix of residents. Visitors can appreciate the many restored masterpieces in this neighborhood on annual home and garden tours. there's your description. ;-)
